Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen replaces Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald in the “Fantastic Beasts” movies. Warner Bros. announced that Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Hannibal) has been cast as the primary antagonist in the upcoming third installment of J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” prequel series.
Earlier this month, Warner Bros. asked Depp to resign from the franchise after he lost a libel case against British Tabloid The Sun, which Depp unsuccessfully sued for referring to him as a “wife beater” in an April 2018 article describing his relationship with ex-wife Amber Heard.
“Firstly, I’d like to thank everybody who has gifted me with their support and loyalty. I have been humbled and moved by your many messages of love and concern, particularly over the last few days,” Depp wrote. “I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in “Fantastic Beasts” and I have respected and agreed to that request.”
